We do some pretty crap stuff, as a species, but we can do this too...
As it happens, I did some googling to see if I could find a higher-res version of the same picture...and it turns out it probably wasn't shot from the ISS after all, but a chase plane:

Sorry, the cut and paste on the URL didn't work. But if you google on '"shuttle launch" from ISS' it's the fifth one down.
Still a cool picture though...
