Eddie, a house painter in Portland OR, attempts to help a variety of down-on-their-luck characters, most notably a young boy threatened by his increasingly violent half-brother, while dealing with his own losses.Tender, in places harrowing, but ultimately uplifting. Notable for Vlautin’s portrayal of marginal lives via economical, pin-sharp prose and a fine ear for dialogue.
