Moon Dance
I found this lovely video of the setting for much of The Quiet War and Gardens of the Sun on Caleb Scharf's Life, Unbounded blog. It was made by Sander van der Berg, using images taken by the Voyager spacecraft and the Cassini orbiter. The miracle isn't only that we find such austere and inhuman vistas beautiful, but that we are also able to understand the interactions between mass, gravity and time that created them.

Beautiful. Trying to explain these kinds of images and ideas to my 4-year-old daughter reminds me of how work it takes for even one human mind to achieve this level of understanding of our world, and in turn how many generations and thousands of people worked together, with inspiration and resourcefulness and perseverance and patience, to make it possible for a parent to have such conversations with his child.
