I don't know how you know how to do this but your Botanical Scientists in the future ring very true to me... especially with your character... Gene Wizard Sri Hong-Owen in the Quiet War Books...
Where a man/woman become something else entirely, it's the ultimate Insult to Humanity/Huwomanity or is it just something more that is needed?
That break from the Whole is the crux of the thing, isn't it? From Frankenstein to Darth Vader isn't that break away from the Norm where the real Horror begins...
In fact Horror reminds me of some of my favorite Science Fiction writers... the more Horrific the better, IMO.
